Observation

August 8th, 2007 by k1cstarke

My initial impressions of the JET are not favorable. Despite the assignment of the expedition leaders by the Penn State administration, there seems to be no discernible chain of command nor any accountability. However, I believe I am getting ahead of myself.

Upon arrival at the Jerusalem site, I noticed that the general state of the camp was disarray. The leadership seemed ready to allow the state of the expedition to remain at its level of chaos, so I said nothing. While waiting patiently for a moment of General Sykes’ time to make our introduction, Miha and I met Rom. Well, perhaps met is the wrong word. Rom used his unique senses to attempt to discern our nature. I admit, I was very much on my guard around him. I think that now I may have sensed then what I know now. More on that later. As it turned out, Penn state had put General Sykes and some thing named Grendles in charge here, when the situation clearly called for leadership more skilled in diplomacy. These failings would come up, unfortunately.

The next morning, I did my normal morning routine of exercises and Kata to prepare my mind and body for the day. The camp was generally slow, until it was deemed that some skirmishers needed to be deployed to reduce the strength of the Sultan in the area. Miha and I went along with the group, and this is when I discovered some things about some of the members of the JET. While his tactical knowledge was sound, the one who called himself D.T. showed himself to be without honor and without self control. A dangerous combination for one who is leading an expedition. On the opposite side of that spectrum, we have Rom. Rom also does not fight with what I consider honor, nor does he have self control. In his case however, he does not appear to revel in that. He is a product of his environment more than anything else, and I have no small amount of pity for him. He commited an act that is perhaps unforgivable, but I do not hold him accountable. I believe that I can teach him some measure of discipline if he will allow me to do so.

But, I digress. We encountered no less than five parties of the Sultan’s men. While we were outnumbered in all of the encounters, we prevailed nonetheless. The men gave a good accounting of themselves, but it was their fate to die that day. Miha, despite being a more avid follower of the Way of the Gun, proved herself to be every ounce the Kensei in these encounters. Her staff work is quite good.

More to come.
